Egypt e-Visa extensions and renewals

Egypt eVisa renewal process

If your Egypt visa has recently expired, or the expiration date is coming up soon, it’s important to take steps to avoid overstaying without the correct permission.

It’s not possible to renew the same visa. Instead, you must either:

  • Request an extension from inside the country, or
  • Leave and apply for a new visa from outside Egypt

On this page, we’ll walk you through both processes. We’ll also outline what happens if you overstay your Egypt visa, and the consequences you can easily avoid with an extension or new entry permit.

Can I renew my Egypt e-Visa? (renewal vs extension)

In practice, the Egyptian e-Visa system doesn’t work as a “renewal” of the same permit. If your visa is due to expire soon, what you do next depends on where you are right now:

Your Situation What You Can Do More Details
You are outside Egypt and want to re-enter Apply for a new e-Visa online Gives you a new entry permit for your next trip with a fresh validity period
You are in Egypt and want to stay longer Request an e-Visa extension in person at an immigration office Lets you stay legally beyond your current expiry (if approved)
You are inside Egypt, but plan to leave and come backt Either extend (to avoid overstay) or leave before expiry and apply for a new e-Visa Keeps you compliant with visa rules and avoids fines or exit issues

Important: Applying for a new e-Visa online does not extend your current stay if you’re already in Egypt. If your expiry date is close, you should either extend in person or leave before it expires.

If your visa has already expired, you should leave the country as soon as possible. You may be due to pay overstay fees at the airport. Your nearest immigration office can explain exactly what’s required in your individual case.

Applying for a new Egypt visa

If your Egypt e-Visa has expired and you are no longer in the country, you cannot renew the same visa. Instead, you must submit a new Egypt e-Visa application online.

As with your original application, you’ll need to complete a digital form with some personal information, like your address, passport details, and date of birth. You must also answer some questions related to security and your travel plans, and opt for a single or multi-entry visa.

Once approved, you can enter Egypt with your new e-Visa. As it’s a new permit, the validity period starts when you cross the border. Single-entry visas grant one stay of up to 30 days. Multiple-entry visas allow you stay for up to 30 days on various visits over 6 months.

Requirements for getting a new eVisa

To apply for a new e-Visa for Egypt, you need:

  • Passport from an eligible country, valid for at least six months from your date of arrival
  • Credit or debit card to pay the visa fee
  • Recent passport-style photo
  • Email address to receive your approved e-Visa in PDF format

How long does the process take?

Once the application has been submitted, it’s normally processed within 1-2 working days.

Sometimes extra documentation is required — we’ll notify you by email if this applies to you. In all cases, you’re recommended to apply at least a week before your travel date.

Once the application has been approved, you’ll receive your approved e-Visa in PDF format by email.

You must print a copy and present it upon arrival in Egypt.

Can I apply for a new e-Visa before my current one expires?

You can submit a new Egypt e-Visa application before your current visa expires.

The new visa is only valid for a new trip. If you’re still in Egypt and your visa is about to expire, applying online for a new e-Visa will not extend your stay. Instead, you must request a visa extension in person at an immigration office.

If you’re outside Egypt and applying for a new e-Visa, it doesn’t matter if your previous visa expires before you apply, while your application is being processed, or after.

Do I need a new Egypt e-Visa if my passport has expired or changed?

Egypt e-Visas are verified electronically at the border, so the passport you travel with needs to match the details given in your e-Visa application.

If you have a valid multiple-entry e-Visa and want to return to the country, but you’ve renewed or replaced your passport, your entry permit will no longer be accepted. Instead, you’ll need a new e-Visa with your updated passport details.

Extending your visa while in Egypt

It’s possible to request a visa extension while you are in Egypt. If approved, you’ll be granted additional time to stay in the country, not a “renewed visa”. Extensions must be requested in person at a local immigration office.

An extension allows you to remain in Egypt beyond the validity of your current visa, but approval is not automatic. Each case is reviewed individually by immigration authorities.

Make sure to request it before your current visa expires to avoid penalties or complications.

How to request an Egyptian visa extension

To apply for an Egyptian visa extension, you need to visit your nearest immigration office in person. In Cairo, the Mugamma Building in Tahrir Square handles extensions. If you’re in another part of the country, check for your nearest office.

You should apply before your current visa expires. When you visit the office, make sure to bring:

  • Your passport
  • A photocopy of your passport information page
  • A copy of your current visa
  • A recent passport-sized photograph

Immigration authorities may request additional documentation depending on your circumstances.

Each case is judged on an individual basis. In some cases, a visa extension is denied, meaning you will need to leave the country before your original permit expires to avoid overstay penalties.

What happens if you overstay your Egyptian visa?

If you remain in Egypt after your visa has expired, you’re considered to be overstaying. In most cases, this results in a fine that must be paid before you are allowed to leave the country.

Overstay fines are typically calculated based on the length of time you have remained beyond your permitted stay. The longer the overstay, the higher the penalty.

Payment is usually made at the airport during departure, and you won’t be allowed to board your flight without covering any outstanding fees.

Overstaying can also cause complications on future visits. Any overstay is visible in the system and could cause you to be denied entry at a later date.

There was previously an informal grace period for short overstays, but this no longer applies. If you realise that your visa is about to expire, apply for an extension before expiry or leave the country before your permitted stay ends.

How do immigration know if you overstay your Egypt visa?

When you arrive in Egypt an immigration officer will check your passport and Egypt visa. Your passport is scanned and stamped, officially marking the date that you entered the country.

When you leave the country, border officials can see both your entry date and your visa’s permitted length of stay when they inspect your documents. If the authorised period has been exceeded, this will appear automatically in the system.

For this reason, overstaying is not something that can go unnoticed, even if it’s only by a few days.

Advice for avoiding overstay penalties

If your current visa is close to expiring and an in-country extension is not suitable for your situation, another option is to leave Egypt and apply for a new e-Visa before returning.

Many travellers choose this route, particularly if they are already planning short trips to nearby destinations. Ensuring you hold a valid entry permit before re-entering Egypt helps avoid fines and unnecessary complications.
